Griquas are targeting a home final─── MORGAN PIEK 07:39 Mon, 13 May 2024
“We'll have to go to Bloemfontein and win that game to get a home final and that's what we are looking for.”
The Suzuki Griquas will head to Bloemfontein to tackle the Toyota Cheetahs this week with one goal in mind and that is to book a home final in the SA Cup.
On the weekend the Griquas secured their spot in the final following a 75-53 win during a tryfest in Kimberley.
The debutant Zane Bester as well as the fullback, Cameron Hufke, each scored a hat-trick of tries as they remained unbeaten in the competition.
The seasoned Griquas flyhalf, George Whitehead, who previously played his rugby at the Shimlas, told OFM Sport that there are work-ons this week.
“We have got a lot of depth and a lot of competition in the team, and I'm very glad for those guys who played in their first game for the side,” said Whitehead.
“After this game we will have to go and have a look at our defence. We conceded more than fifty points and that is just not good enough.
“We'll have to go to Bloemfontein and win that game to get a home final and that's what we are looking for.”

Meanwhile, Bester, who impressed immediately at the Griquas, told OFM Sport that scoring a hat-trick on debut makes it one that he will remember for a long time.
“It was insane and the tempo of playing in the SA Cup was a lot higher than playing in the Varsity Cup for me,” said Bester.
“It's actually a perfect debut and I'm always going to remember that I scored three tries in my first game for the Griquas. The credit has to go to the other guys on the field because they did their best for me to be able to score a hat-trick.
“It's not exactly the score that we wanted but we came through at the end and we got the win, so that's the most important thing.”
Friday night’s derby between the Cheetahs and Griquas at Shimla Park kicks off at 18:00.
