It's do-or-die for the Griquas─── MORGAN PIEK 08:17 Mon, 29 May 2023
The Currie Cup runners-up from last year, the Griquas, will need to turn in two good performances in Kimberley this week and next if they are to stand a chance of reaching the semi-finals again.
On Saturday the Griquas were denied a win against the Toyota Cheetahs in Bloemfontein as the Springbok Ruan Pienaar converted a difficult penalty to draw the game 29-29.
This penalty by the seasoned Pienaar was in the last minute of the game at the Toyota Stadium to deny the Griquas a win, while it also meant that the Cheetahs secured three points. Two for the draw and one for scoring four tries.
A bonus point is something the Griquas weren’t able to achieve, and being the team with the least amount of bonus points in the competition could very well come back to haunt them.
This week the Griquas will host Western Province at home, and the visitors from Cape Town will also be desperate to return to winning ways after being beaten 34-12 by the Lions in Athlone.
The Griquas coach, Pieter Bergh, told OFM Sport that this week's game will be do-or-die.
“We don't know what it going to happen, we've had to focus on ourselves and that's what we've had to do the last two weeks,” said Bergh.
“We do look at the opposition as well and I thought that got our tactics spot on, but we've got to get certain things right against Western Province. It doesn't matter which side they bring to Kimberley.
“That union is so full of confidence currently. They will come to Kimberley and they will push for a win. They are also under pressure and they also need a win.
“Having said that, we will probably need two wins to get into the playoffs.”
Friday’s game in Kimberley kicks off at 15:00.
