The Toyota Cheetahs lock, Walt Steenkamp, has confirmed that he will be leaving the team at the end of the season. The 24-year-old second-rower is set for a stint at the Bulls in order to pursue his Springbok dreams.

Steenkamp joined the Cheetahs from the North-West University Pukke and Leopards in 2018, and in his first season, he was able to win the Currie Cup.

Steenkamp told OFM Sport that it was not an easy decision to leave, and winning the Currie Cup in his first season was a career highlight.

“Deciding to leave the Cheetahs was not an easy decision at all. We are very happy here and quickly fell in love with Bloemfontein and its people. It is with a heavy heart that we will be leaving.

“After the Varsity Cup, I had the opportunity to sign at the Cheetahs, and in my first season of the Currie Cup, I was able to lift the trophy. That is any young player's dream and it will forever remain a highlight for me.

“I am and will always be grateful for everything that Cheetahs rugby has meant to me, from its coaches to the players.

While no official announcement has been made yet, Carl Wegner is expected to return to the Cheetahs after completing his contract at Toyota Verblitz in Japan.
