The Griffons have appointed Jacques Juries as their new head coach on a two-year contract. Juries takes over the role from Oersond Gorgonzola who coached the team for the past 11 years.

In October the Griffons announced that they will be advertising the post for a new head coach, while Gorgonzola was afforded the opportunity to reapply for his job.

Both Gorgonzola and Eric Herbert will stay on at the union as assistants, and the CEO Eugene van Wyk, agreed that sometimes new blood and a fresh outlook can do wonders for a team, however, he told OFM Sport that their experience will be very important.

“It is so, but we have retained the services of both Eric and Oersond in the coaching team. We haven’t really assigned their exact roles in the setup yet, but both of them will be assistants to Jacques.

“We don’t want to lose the experience of both of them. We just felt that the with a new coaching coming in, retaining the experience of the two who have walked a long road with us, will only be an asset to the organisation.

“Both of them have a very good winning record, and it was the same with Jacques at the U20 team.

“If we can figure out the combination between the three, and I believe we will, it can only be to the advantage of the Griffons.”

Under the guidance of Gorgonzola, the Griffons won the Currie Cup First Division four times.
