The Toyota Cheetahs fullback Clayton Blommetjies seems to have given up hope of ever representing the Springboks after expressing his interest in representing Wales on a national level in an interview with WalesOnLine.

The 27-year-old has recently penned a deal with Welsh Pro14 club Scarlets, and indicated over the weekend that his aspirations for the green and gold has taken a massive hit and that Wales could potentially become his new home.

The Western Cape born sportsman said that, 2017's Super Rugby season saw him play some of his best rugby worthy of national representation according to then Bok assistant coach Franco Smith.

Much to his disappointment, the call from SA Rugby never came.

“I don’t even think about wearing the green and gold anymore because I never had an opportunity to do it,” Blommetjies told WalesOnLine.

In 2020 World Rugby's new restriction residency qualification period for international players increases from the current 3 years to 5 years.

Fortunately for Blommetjies, his newly signed Scarlets deal requires him in  Llanelli this year which makes him eligible to play for Wales as soon as the end of 2021 or beginning of 2022.

Blommetjies represented the Toyota Cheetahs on 54 occasions scoring some 60 points in the process.
