A new Currie Cup champion will be crowned in 2017 after the Toyota Free State Cheetahs were knocked out on Saturday evening.

The Golden Lions beat the Cheetahs 44-17 at Ellis Park in Johannesburg.

The Cheetahs sent a near full strength side to the Highveld, however, they were no match for the determination shown by the 2015 champions.

While the Cheetahs showed glimpses of the team which won the title in 2016, it was a day in which things just didn’t seem to workout. The Lions did exceptional work to disrupt the Cheetahs scrum, while the men from Bloemfontein couldn’t control the ball in vital areas of the game.

Having said that, there were at least four occasions where the Lions actually crossed the whitewash, but the tries were disallowed because of a double movement, a forward pass and two knock-ons' in the lead up to the tries.

Discipline was also an area in which the Cheetahs were found wanting.

The Lions will travel to Cape Town next week to face Western Province who beat the Sharks 31-20 at Kings’ Park in Durban earlier on Saturday afternoon. The Sharks in their turn will host John Mitchell’s Blue Bulls on the East Coast.

For the Cheetahs there is a mini-break with the teams focus shifting solely to the Guinness Pro14. The Cheetahs fly out to Italy on 23 October for their game against Zebre in Parma on the 28th, which is also the same day as the Currie Cup final.

Scorers:

Golden Lions: Tries - Courtnall Skosan 2, Cyle Brink, Kwagga Smith, Robert Kruger Conv. – Jaco van der Walt 3, Andries Coetzee Pen. – Van der Walt 3

Toyota FS Cheetahs:  Tries – Makazole Mapimpi, Tier Schoeman Conv. - Ernst Stapelberg 2 Pen. – Stapelberg.
