The South African Indoor Hockey men, etched their names in history by delivering a flawless performance on Friday (7/2) to defeat the world’s second ranked Iran and by doing so, secured an historic semi-final berth at an FIH Indoor Hockey World Cup.
The 2025 World Cup is being played in Porec, Croatia. Not only did South Africa beat the much more fancied Iranians, but they convincingly thrashed them 6-0 to boost their confidence going forward.
The game began with the disheartening news that Justin Domleo, the team's most experienced player, had been ruled out for the remainder of the tournament due to injury. This setback seemed to galvanise the South African team, who appeared determined to win the game for their stalwart teammate.

From the opening whistle to the final hooter, South Africa's defensive display was nothing short of extraordinary. The effort was superbly marshalled by Jethro Eustice and bolstered by the contributions of Rusten Abrahams, Keegan Hezlett, and Leruo Ditlhakanyane.
South Africa took the lead when Mustapha Cassiem converted an expertly executed penalty corner, leaving Iranian goalkeeper Hataminejad with no chance. Shortly after, Litha Kraai was fouled in the circle, earning South Africa a penalty stroke. Cassiem, who had already sent the keeper the wrong way, surprisingly missed the target, and the score remained 1-0.
The second quarter saw the South Africans take to the court with renewed determination, and they wasted no time in adding to their tally. Mustapha Cassiem netted his second goal with another brilliantly executed penalty corner variation. Moments later, Cassiem turned provider, setting up Dalpiarro Langford as Iran struggled to contain South Africa’s precision and intensity.

In the second half, Langford secured his brace, while Litha Kraai extended the lead to 5-0 with a trademark reverse flick. The final moments of the game saw Mustapha Cassiem complete his hat-trick as the South African defence ensured the goalkeepers had little to do, sealing a clean sheet and a landmark victory.
With this historic result, South Africa now face Germany in the semi-finals, knowing they have already achieved their best-ever finish at an FIH World Cup.
Saturday's semi-final beat South Africa and Germany at the Zatika Sport Centre in Porec will get underway at 16:00. The second semi-final at 17:10 will be contested between Austria and Belgium.
