Two more hockey greats hang up their sticks─── MORGAN PIEK 10:24 Wed, 20 Nov 2024
The Proteas Women’s hockey team bid farewell to two more legends of the game in South Africa. The co-captain and double Olympian, Erin Christie, and the striker Tarryn Lombard have both announced their retirement from the sport.
They become the second and third veteran players to hang up their sticks following the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.
Christie represented South Africa in over 100 Tests, while Lombard represented her country 91 times and she scored 35 goals.
South Africa Hockey’s Interim CEO, Shaune Baaitjies, expressed her gratitude to the pair for their years of dedication to the national women’s team.
“Both Erin and Tarryn have been incredible ambassadors for South African hockey,” said Baaitjies.
“Erin’s leadership, passion, and relentless commitment to the game have been an inspiration to everyone who has watched her play. Tarryn’s flair and eye for goal made her a constant threat to the opposition and a joy to watch.

“Their contributions to the game, on and off the field, will leave a lasting legacy. We thank them both for their incredible service and wish them all the best as they move into the next chapters of their lives. They will always be part of the SA Hockey family.”
They follow in the footsteps of the legendary Dirkie Chamberlain who called it a day straight after the Olympics following a stellar career for South Africa in international hockey.
