Bloemfontein's golden boy, Wayde van Niekerk has been forced to withdraw from the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games due to a knee injury.
The 400m Olympic and world champion, confirmed his withdrawal from the games on social media adding that he will be off the track for some time.
The anterior cruciate ligament as well as meniscus tear, is believed to have been picked up while playing in a celebrity touch rugby match in the mother city of Cape Town.
The 400m world record holder who was set to wow spectators in the 100m and 200m on the Gold Coast between 4 and 15 April now finds himself in the United States where he will undergo a medical procedure at the Steadman Clinic in Vail, Colorado.
Following surgery, he will undergo rehabilitation for six months in Vail, Doha and South Africa, and will therefore be unavailable to compete in any events for at least the first 5 months of 2018.
Thanks to all for the kind wishes!Sadly I announce now that I'll be off the track for a while. Will be back stronger! https://t.co/grvzwspVEn
