A garlic farmer in Malawi, Gershom Chimutu, explains that the garlic process, especially in his area, is mostly organically farmed, which means that it requires fertile land and large amounts of manure to yield the best results.
He says that conditions for farming garlic include a lot of rain, as the process for garlic farming takes an estimated six months, irrigation systems are recommended for when rain is not as frequent and the purchase of proper garlic bulbs from trusted companies plays an imperative role in the process of garlic farming.
He says that he has been able to export to countries such as South Africa, Botswana, Zambia and Zimbabwe and can deem garlic farming as very profitable and economically beneficial.
Chimutu recommends speaking to garlic farmers in your area prior to endeavouring in this kind of farming. He adds that without the necessary guidance, resources, skills, and tips the farming process might be a trying one for farmers who go into the field blindly. He further emphasizes the importance of choosing the correct soil type when farming with garlic.
He goes on to say that pest control and disease control on garlic farms should be done as soon as any irregularity is spotted as any irregularity can cause major damage to the present and future plantations.
Chimutu concludes by saying that those who are currently farming with garlic are encouraged to ensure that the management of their crop is always up to standard.
