The Department of Police, Roads, and Transport in the Free State understands the frustrations that road users in general, and farmers in particular, are experiencing. This is according to MEC William Bulwane during his recent budget speech. Bulwane says continuous heavy rainfall and flooding have contributed to the forming of potholes, slippages, and washing away of pipes and culverts on some of the roads. The MEC adds that as his department plans and tries to expand the provincial tarred road network with new projects, rain on the other hand takes them two steps back by eroding some of the roads that were supposed to still be intact under normal circumstances.
There is a prevailing perception that R4 million was sufficient to start cannabis farming. However, Danie Nel, CEO of Afriplex, says that the true cost was closer to R20 million. He says cannabis is a very sophisticated crop that requires a sophisticated set-up. Farmer's Weekly's editor, Janine Ryan, adds that there are also compliance and certification costs and salaries of full-time pharmacists who need to be employed on-site, which are what Nel calls hidden costs that producers tend not to consider when drawing up their business plans.
