After serving a prison term of nine years under the terrorism act, well-known anti-apartheid and Afrikaner writer Breyten Breytenbach was released on 2 December 1982.

Breytenbach was sentenced under the Terrorism Act and charged with attempting to open a white wing branch of the African National Congress (ANC), Okhela or Atlas .

He was released after immense international intervention and asserted pressure on the South Africa’s apartheid government.
