The Anglican Bishop of Johannesburg, Reverend Ambrose Reeves, was secretly deported to England through Jan Smuts (now O.R Tambo) airport on 12 September 1960.
His exit out of the country did not go through the formal procedures and according to The Star newspaper, 23 passengers were listed on the London flight with a seat in the tourist section marked as occupied, but with no name on it.
Bishop Reeves was allegedly put on board in the hangar are before the plane pulled up in front of the terminal building.
An immigration official found that an extra person who had not gone through formalities was now on board the aircraft.
The official issued an order for the aircraft to return to the apron. But his order was ignored as the aircraft took-off.
The priest became the enemy of the State after witnessing the Sharpeville shootings in March 1960.
