Manto Tshabalala-Msimang has died of liver failure | News Article

Manto Tshabalala-Msimang has died, at the age of 69. Her doctor, Professor Jeff Wing confirmed that the former health minister died in the Wits University Donald Gordon Medical Centre shortly before 3 o'clock this afternoon. He said she died from complications related to her liver transplant. Tshabalala-Msimang underwent a liver transplant in March 2007 and was readmitted with complications last month. Never far from controversy, Tshabalala-Msimang's views on the treatment of HIV/Aids drew international condemnation, especially her advocacy of beetroot, garlic, and African potatoes as nutritional supplements to fight the disease. Another controversial issue during her tenure as health minister were her efforts to reduce the cost of medicines to the public raising the ire of pharmacists around South Africa, who took her to court, claiming she was threatening their continued existence. Tshabalala-Msimang was married to ANC veteran Mendi Msimang. She has two daughters, Zuki and Pulane.
