ANCWL against early elective conference─── 04:40 Mon, 05 Sep 2016
Johannesburg - An early ANC elective conference would distract the party's focus from other important and urgent matters, the ANC Women's League (ANCWL) said on Sunday.
"An early conference would focus our attention on issues that we have identified that need to be dealt with urgently such as the situation at our universities and education in general, issues of economic empowerment of women and gender-based violence... We don't support any structure of the ANC that calls for an early elective conference," it said in a statement.
This comes after the ANC Youth League called for an early elective conference following the party's poor performance during the local government elections.
However, the ANCWL said: "There is no justification of an ANC conference without processes of ensuring we have strong branches in good standing that would deliberate on matters to be taken to the conference, including the issues that society raised."
It said an early conference would derail its agenda to ensure women were elevated to top positions in the party.
"If we are to agree to that as the ANCWL, we believe the agenda of women will disappear and our efforts to emancipate women will be reduced to nothing."
