5 injured as mall roof collapses in Krugersdorp during hailstorm | News Article

Krugersdorp- Five people have sustained minor to serious injuries after a section of the roof at Key West Shopping Centre in Krugersdorp, west of Gauteng, collapsed on Saturday afternoon, paramedics said.

All the injured were stabilised on scene before being taken to nearby hospitals for further treatment, Netcare 911 Athlenda Mathe said.

Meanwhile, heavy rainstorms and hail have caused dozens of motorists to scramble to cover their cars, while others helped rescue motorists stuck in flooded roads.

Mogale City's public safety manager Chief Superintendent William Nchefu said hail the size of eggs began falling heavily around 18:00 in the area.

"It started drizzling and then shortly after that it just started hailing."

About five major accidents were recorded during the storm, which lasted about an hour, he said.

"One car slipped and rolled on the road because the hail was almost 20 centimetres high on the surface."

Nchefu said the sudden rush for motorists to move their cars under some form of cover was the main cause of the accidents that had occurred during the storm.

A number of vehicles were dented, with their windows and windscreens damaged during the storm, including official vehicles, he said.

Although the storm had come to an end around 19:00, Nchefu urged motorists to drive with caution as the roads were still very wet and slippery.

Although both Netcare 911 or ER24 had not been called to rescue any motorists, some motorists had captured scenes of the intense storm on social media.

City Press journalist Sipho Masondo assisted in rescuing a motorist who had his car submerged halfway into the water.

Krugersdorp resident Brendan Evans said he had resorted to covering his cars, duvets, boxes, mats etc to minimise the extent of damage.

"[They] still took a hit, small dents only," he said.
