Jeffreys Bay - South Africa’s National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) on Sunday urged bathers and surfers to be careful in the waters of Jeffreys Bay after a professional surfer survived an encounter with a shark during the J-Bay open.
The event taking place at South Africa’s most famous surf spot was closed after three time J-Bay winner, Australian Mick Fanning, fought off a shark on live television.
“The organisers of the surfing competition, WSL (World Surf League), have called off the surfing competition for today following the incident,” the NSRI
“The surfer involved in the shark encounter, Australian Mick Fanning, and fellow competitor, Australian Julian Wilson, were picked up by the surfing competitions own safety boat and brought to shore without incident and no one was harmed.”
