New 'mushroom' big news for SA─── 11:40 Sat, 10 Jan 2015
Durban - There's exciting news for foodies: South Africa's first homegrown black truffle, a globally scarce underground mushroom prized by chefs, has been discovered.
It was found using a sniffer dog on a farm in the Dullstroom area of Mpumalanga but DNA analysis only confirmed recently that it was indeed a truffle.
KZN Midlands-based mushroom researcher Neil Van Rij was involved in the verification process.
He told East Coast Radio Newswatch that the breakthrough is significant given that truffles go for R12 500 a kilo when imported.
