Arrive Alive says the safety of cyclists has become a major concern on South Africa roads.

Mountain bike ace, Burry Stander, was killed yesterday when he was struck by a minibus taxi while training in Shelley Beach, on the KwaZulu-Natal South Coast. He was declared dead at the scene.

Two years ago, another elite South African cyclist, Carla Swart, was killed when she was hit by a truck while training near Marquard in the Free State. And the Northern Cape community was shocked by the death of lawyer, Mark van Niekerk, in December last year after he was struck by a vehicle while taking part in a road race in Kathu.

The Road Traffic Management Corporation's Ashref Ismail says 40% of all fatalities in 2012 were pedestrians, which include cyclists. He says cyclists are considered vulnerable road users.

Meanwhile, the Bloemfontein cycling community will celebrate the life of Burry Stander tomorrow morning.

OFM general manager Nick Efstathiou says a ride-along will get underway from the official MTN OFM classic starting point in Att Horak Street at 08:00.

Efstathiou says cyclists and members of the public are invited to take part in the event, which will also be used to highlight the safety of cyclists on the road.
