NC roadblock yields positive results | News Article

A roadblock by police in the Northern Cape’s John Taolo Gaetsewe Cluster on the N14 between Kuruman and Kagung village yielded positive results.

This is according to police spokesperson in the province, Olebogeng Tawana, who revealed that more than 300 vehicles were stopped and searched during the roadblock yesterday. Tawana also revealed that physical searches were conducted on more than 150 people and more than R4000’s worth of traffic fines were issued to motorists.

Tawana said that the focus of the static roadblock was to search for stolen vehicles, transportation of illegal properties, to confiscate the illegal possession of firearms and to check on drivers without drivers’ licences, as well as remove unroadworthy vehicles from the road. This comes after a mid-festive season preliminary road safety report by the Transport Department and Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) revealed that the Northern Cape has thus far recorded the highest percentage increase in road fatalities.

The roadblock was led by Major General Johan Bean and Major General Joey Kers. There was a heavy presence of high-level forces. Tawana said other motorists appreciated the presence and high level of police visibility on the roads during the festive season.
