NW Health MEC tackles Tuberculosis─── PULANE CHOANE 09:34 Sun, 18 Nov 2018
The MEC of Health in North West, Magome Masike, will be intensifying efforts to raise awareness on Tuberculosis (TB).
Masike said this during a two-day TB summit in Rustenburg, which is a hub of chrome and platinum mines.
He also met with members of the community at the Freedom Park Phase 2 sports grounds, where he revealed his plans for reducing the scourge of TB in the province, particularly among mining communities where it is most prevalent.
The summit was held on Thursday and Friday in Rustenburg and was meant to engage stakeholders and roleplayers like mines on how to curb the scourge of the disease in the province.
Masike also revealed that in the last financial year, the North West government had 16 541 recorded cases of susceptible Tuberculosis (TB).
A total of 5 181 cases were recorded in Bojanala District of which 2414 cases were in the mining town of Rustenburg.
The MEC said his aims for reducing both the incidence and mortalities related to the illness will be in line with the National TB Programme Strategic Plan (2017-2021), which aims to reduce TB mortality and incidence by 43% and 26% respectively.
A total of 454 00 people are diagnosed with TB in South Africa and 300 000 people are initiated on treatment.
