A severe thunderstorm is expected to hit parts of Central South Africa this weekend.

Forecaster at the South African Weather Service’s Bloemfontein office, Tumi Phatudi tells OFM News the eastern parts of the North West province and the Northern parts of the Free State, specifically the areas north of Kroonstad and Bethlehem will be the hardest hit.

Phatudi adds there is a high possibility of hail, strong winds and heavy downpour in general. She explains while the rest of central South Africa won’t be as negatively impacted.

Phatudi says people residing in the remaining central parts of South Africa can expect 30% to 60% of showers and in some places thundershowers, not quite as severe as the above mentioned areas.

She adds that most places will experience cloudy conditions in the morning. These conditions will continue till Sunday and will only start clearing up on Monday.

Aside from the North West and Free State, the South African Weather Service predicts that Gauteng, Western parts of Mpumalanga and Kwa-Zulu Natal will also be impacted. The service warns that “In addition to potential for hail and damaging winds, there is also a likelihood for localised heavy rain and/or incidents of flash flooding for the above mentioned areas. The public in these areas are advised to exercise extreme caution”.
