The newly elected SRC president at the University of the Free State’s (UFS) Bloemfontein campus on Thursday reiterated that women abuse will not be tolerated under his watch.

EFF candidate, Sonwabile Dwaba, was announced as the new president at the Thakaneng Bridge this afternoon after receiving 4135 votes, almost 1600 more votes than the other candidate in the running.

He takes over the reigns from Asive Dlanjwa.

Dwaba’s comments comes on the back of recent events at the university after a female student was allegedly assaulted by her partner, a member of the university’s SRC, during the early hours of Wednesday morning at a hostel on campus.

The exact circumstances surrounding the incident is, however, unknown at this stage and is now being investigated by both the police and the university’s Protection Services, according to a statement released by the university.

Addressing students shortly after being announced as the new SRC president, Dwaba said records were broken during the recent SRC elections and called on students to join hands to transform the university.

More then 6 900 voted during the elections. This is cited as the highest turnout for SRC elections.

Six portfolios were won by EFF candidates, while one portfolio was won by an independent candidate.
