#UFS investigates assault by SRC member─── MARK STEENBOK 16:51 Wed, 22 Aug 2018
The University of the Free State (UFS) says they are providing medical and counselling services to a female student who was allegedly assaulted.
This, according to reports by her partner, a current member of the university’s Student Representative Council (SRC), happened outside a men’s residence at the Bloemfontein campus.
The university's spokesperson, Lacea Loader, said in a statement that the incident took place Tuesday morning. The exact circumstances surrounding the incident is, however, unknown at this stage and is now being investigated by both the police and the university’s Protection Services.
Loader says the university’s unit responsible for student discipline and mediation is also aware of the incident and it is being investigated.
The SRC has meanwhile expressed their dismay and condemned the conduct of the alleged perpetrator, especially in the light of the progressive policies on anti-discrimination, sexual assault, harassment, and gender-based violence that were approved by the university’s council recently.
The university said that they will continue with awareness and visible safety interventions to ensure the speedy reporting of such incidents and conclusions of the investigations.
