WATCH: Maluti-A-Phofung celebrates mayor being recalled─── KATLEHO MORAPELA 08:44 Tue, 08 May 2018
The ANC in the Free State has recalled Maluti-A-Phofung Executive Mayor, Vusi Tshabalala.
This comes months after the municipality was placed under administration, making it the third municipality to be placed under administration in the province. Although Tshabalala has survived a number of no confidence motions tabled by the EFF, he was yesterday removed by the party's PTT following weeks of engagements. This financially troubled municipality is among those still indebted to Eskom. The municipality owes the power utility over R2 billion for bulk electricity supply, and the water board more than R200 million.
OFM News, at the beginning of the year, reported that the municipality was grappling with service delivery, while residents' taps were also left dry.
The South African Municipal Workers' Union (Samwu) Provincial Secretary, Thabang Tseuoa, told OFM News that putting the municipality under administration was a step in the right direction after the municipality has failed to deliver services, pay employees their salaries, pension funds, medical aids and other third parties.
