Calm restored at Tswaing | News Article

Delareyville - The Tswaing Local Municipality has sent water tankers to affected areas in Delareyville in North West following incidents of violent service delivery protests.

The spokesperson for the provincial government, Brian Setswambung, says this follows a meeting between Mayor Dimakatso Malwane and residential leaders.

“Fortunately the water tankers have already been deployed, to ensure that the water shortage are attended to in the area. They will be in the area until the municipality comes up with a long term solution to ensure that the water problem are procured and replaced,” says Setswambung.

Parts of the municipality have been without water for a number of days due to cables that were stolen. The protests that followed led to business, government offices, schools and local shops being closed down.

A section of the R507 road from Geysdorp to Delareyville was also barricaded with burning tires and rocks. Another group blocked the N14 road from Vryburg to Delareyville and the N14 between Sannieshof and Delareyville, which consequently disturbed the flow of traffic. The community also allegedly looted foreign nationals' stores in Extension 7 outside the town. Setswambung says the situation is calm and that residence were seen cleaning the streets by yesterday afternoon.

The DA in the province earlier also raised their concern about the protests, which affected matric learners in the area. North West Provincial Chairperson, Carin Visser, said in a statement that they will write to Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga to ensure that learners are not denied their basic right to education.

Setswambung in response said that resident leaders ensured the mayor during the meeting that learners would be allowed to attend classes by Monday and that municipal and government offices would reopen for the public.

The 28 people – including 19 women and 9 men – that were arrested for public violence during the protests in Delareyville, appeared briefly in the Local Magistrate's Court on Tuesday. The matter was postponed until November 17.

Police spokesperson Adele Myburgh says the situation in Delareyville was calm throughout the night.
