Matjhabeng to address water and electricity crisis─── KATLEHO MORAPELA 13:16 Thu, 03 Aug 2017
The Matjhabeng Local Municipality in the Free State says water leaks and illegal electricity connections in its six towns is costing the municipality millions.
The municipal spokesperson, Kgojane Matutle, says a contracted company will in the next few days conduct meter inspections in the different towns to fix meters that are malfunctioning. This comes soon after the financial woes of this municipality have come under the spotlight when National Treasury withheld its equitable share because of its debt to Eskom and the Water Board. Matutle, however, says this will help the municipality save money.
He says the majority of suburbs in Allanridge, Hennenman, Odendaalsrus, Ventersburg, Virginia, and Welkom will be visited.
The municipality has in the past allegedly asked the police to assist after its workers were threatened when they started cutting off electricity supply to households with outstanding municipal accounts in Thabong, Welkom.
