Nationwide Nehawu strike begins─── NOMAQHAWE MTEBELE 16:41 Wed, 26 Jul 2017
A national strike by the National Education, Health and Allied Workers’ Union (Nehawu) at the National Health Laboratory Service (NHLS) is taking place today.
The strike comes after failed negotiations between the union and the health service provider as well as lunch hour pickets by workers. According to Nehawu’s Khaya Xaba, demands still include a 7.3% salary increase, housing, and danger allowance, as well as the insourcing of workers…
“The strike will continue indefinitely until management decides to accept our demands. Other than that, nothing is going to happen as we are going to continue striking until we get what we want. The strike is countrywide at all NHLS offices, not only in Gauteng, but everywhere, including the Free State,” explains Xaba.
The union demands a housing allowance of R2000 per month, along with R500 per month for “drivers, receiving clerks, messengers, cleaners and any other job categories potentially exposed to infectious organisms” at the laboratory service, according to Xaba.
