Bloemfontein - The challenges of inequality and poverty that many millions of South Africans are going through are affecting the youth the most.

This is according to Judge President of the Supreme Court of Appeal, Mandisa Maya.

She said the country’s leadership just needs to manage the state’s resources in a responsible manner because South Africa is not a poor country.

Maya adds that issues affecting the youth need to be addressed more rigorously.

“One sympathises with our young people. I mean, there are so many challenges, hence causes such as #FeesMustFall which I think are warranted. It’s good to see that our youth actually cares about their future although there are some aspects that one is not happy about. I think our youth is awake. They see what goes on around them, they are concerned and they are taking action. Hopefully, things will come right and they will be able to enjoy a future that they deserve,” she says.

Maya says to a certain extent the youth of today have far greater challenges as opposed to the youth of yesteryear.

She was appointed as the first Judge President of the Supreme Court of Appeal in Bloemfontein in May by President Jacob Zuma after serving in the same position as an acting mandate for nine months.

She has outlined gender parity and updating the court’s library system as some of the things on her wishlist as President of the court.
