Qwaqwa - A total of 27 students were arrested during protests at the University of the Free State’s Qwaqwa campus on Tuesday.
Students were protesting against the deregistration of NSFAS beneficiaries whose payments are yet to be received by the university. Provisionally registered students face deregistration should the full registration fees not to be paid by Friday.
Police spokesperson, Mmako Mophiring, said clashes ensued between police, students and private security when students took their protest off campus to the main road across the campus’s main gate.
“There was an unfortunate part where we noticed that there were now illegal issues that were taking place. Especially with the closure of roads and the throwing of stones to vehicles passing by,” he said.
A fire also erupted at one building on campus.
Mophiring said the students will appear before the Phuthaditjhaba Magistrate's Court today.
He added that police are monitoring the situation on campus this morning and all is calm at the moment.
UFS spokesperson, Lacea Loader, told OFM News the university would issue a statement later with regards to comment on this matter.
