Northern Cape MEC to intervene at Hantam municipality─── CATHY DLODLO 05:50 Wed, 27 Jan 2016
Kimberley - Northern Cape MEC for Cooperative Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs, Alvin Botes, will intervene at the Hantam Local Municipality after it barred the Auditor General’s (AG) office from the presentation of its report last week.
The municipality includes the towns of Calvinia and Loeriesfontein.
Botes said a letter was sent to the municipality stating that its actions were illegal, but to no avail. He said no municipality is allowed to issue ‘banning orders’ to the Auditor General.
Botes said his department was now looking at possible legal remedies to set aside the banning orders by the mayor and the municipal manager.
He said this comes while the municipality’s audit opinion has worsened, with unauthorised expenditure of almost half a million rand and multiple contraventions of tender procedures, as evidenced in its latest audit report.
