Calm your furry friend during fireworks | News Article

OFM’s very own Odette de Mascot has made loads of lists, and checked all of them twice, to help you make your holidays better than nice….

You love your pet and the idea that something so adorable is almost completely dependent on you, can be a little scary.

So show your pet exactly how much you care for them this New Year’s by sheltering them from the terrifying firework bangs.

According to happytailsfromhusse.com, you should put your pet in a safe space where the windows are closed and your pet can be comfortable.

Spray the room with lavender oil to have a calming effect on your pet. Distract your pet with some food puzzles or a new toy.

If you have a dog, make sure that you take your dog out for as much exercise as possible before the New Year’s celebrations begin. Keep your cat moving with toys and laser pointers before the evening festivities start. They’ll be too tired to be stressed.

A precaution that you can take is pre-exposure to loud sounds. You can do this by making loud noises, blowing the noisemakers, and clanking the pots and pans a few days before New Year’s Eve. Be careful, if you have a particularly anxious pet, this might make your pet’s anxiety worse.

You should try to comfort your pet by speaking to them calmly and telling them ‘it’s okay’.

Lastly, if all else fails, leave the neighbourhood for some place quieter. Please note that this may not work on cats or some parrots as it can upset them to be out of their regular environment.
