Proteas captain Temba Bavuma is set to represent the Lions, marking his first first-class appearance of the season. 

Bavuma comes into the match on the back of a stellar Test season for South Africa, where he averaged 72 runs per innings. Adding to the Lions’ batting strength, fellow Proteas batter Zubayr Hamza will also be available for selection.

Lions head coach, Russell Domingo, expressed confidence in his team's ability to secure a positive result but acknowledged the Knights’ desperation as they strive for a top-four finish to avoid relegation.

“It’s been a tricky period for us, with the last few matches limited to first innings play. However, accumulating valuable bonus points, coupled with other teams’ results, has kept us in a strong position,” said the former Proteas coach.

“This is a pivotal match in Bloemfontein. The Knights are fighting for survival, and the weather could again play a factor. I expect Free State to prepare a result-oriented pitch, given their need to secure a top-four position.

“I’m surprised they find themselves in this situation, as I believed they had been performing adequately,” Domingo added. However, I am confident we will deliver a stronger performance in Bloemfontein. We’ve had a frank discussion, and I’m looking for a positive response. 

“Ultimately, it’s the bowlers who win tournaments, and they now have potentially two matches to make a significant impact. We certainly missed Bjorn Fortuin, and his return as our lead spinner is a welcome addition.”

Play at the Mangaung Oval is scheduled to start at 10:00 on Thursday morning.
