4-Day Series reaches a boiling point─── MORGAN PIEK 07:41 Thu, 03 Apr 2025

The Knights face a defining moment in the Division 1 4-Day Series as they prepare for a high-stakes clash against log-leaders, the Lions, at Mangaung Oval in Bloemfontein.
Sitting in sixth place, the Free State must secure a victory to keep their hopes alive and avoid relegation.
With the battle at both ends of the table intensifying, the Knights find themselves in a must-win scenario. Their challenge is formidable: the Lions, who currently sit at the top with 110.14 points, need just one more win to secure a place in the first-class final. However, if the Knights can pull off an upset, they not only keep their own survival hopes alive but also throw the title race wide open.

JP Triegaardt’s side has no margin for error. To escape relegation, the Knights must rise at least two log positions and finish fourth. Even a win might not be enough if two of the Titans, Dolphins, Western Province, or Boland manage victories in their respective encounters. This adds extra pressure on the Knights to not only win but to do so emphatically, ensuring they gather enough bonus points to keep their fate in their own hands.
If the Knights can produce a substantial victory, it could be the Warriors who find themselves demoted. The Eastern Cape side must also chase maximum points against the Dolphins while hoping that the Dragons, currently seventh, struggle to accumulate bonus points. Should all results align in the Knights’ favour, they could complete a dramatic turnaround.

The odds are stacked against them, but the Knights have reason to believe. Their squad boasts key contributors capable of delivering under pressure. The batting lineup must rise to the occasion, while their bowling attack will have to find a way to dismantle the Lions’ strong unit. With relegation looming, every run and every wicket will be crucial.
Beyond the battle for survival, the individual performance race is another subplot. Lesego Senokwane, Jordan Hermann, George Linde, and G Roelofsen are locked in a close contest for the top run-scorer spot, while Shaun von Berg, Prenelan Subrayen, and Beyers Swanepoel lead the wicket-taking charts.
As the Knights take to the field, the stakes couldn’t be higher. Their destiny is in their hands, and only a bold, determined performance will be enough to keep them in the top flight of South African cricket.
All of the games are scheduled to get underway at 10:00 on Thursday.
