The Sunrisers Eastern Cape marched into the SA20 final with an 8-wicket win over the Paarl Royals in the second qualifier in Centurion on Thursday night.
The Sunrisers made history in the competition by becoming the first-ever team to reach three consecutive finals. They achieved this milestone in what was the 100th match of the SA20. At one stage in the tournament, it seemed as if the franchise from Gqeberha would not defend their title after suffering three consecutive defeats in their opening games. Towards the backend of the competition, they struggled a bit as well, but regained the form especially with the bat when it mattered most.
The Royals batted first at SuperSport Park and scored 175/5 in their allotted 20 overs, with Rubin Hermann scoring 81 not out off 52 balls, including eight fours and three sixes, and Lhuan-Dré Pretorius contributing 59 off 41 balls with eight fours and one six.

With the ball, captain Aiden Markram and Craig Overton each took 1/24.
In reply, Tony de Zorzi scored 78 off 49 balls, including 11 fours and two sixes, while Jordan Hermann (brother of Rubin Hermann) scored 69 not out off 48 balls with four fours and four sixes, chasing down the target with four balls to spare. Dunith Wellalage took 1/26, while teenager Kwena Maphaka claimed 1/29 in 3.2 overs.
Proteas opening batter Tony de Zorzi said he was thrilled to get a chance to play, especially as he didn’t expect it.
“It's very, very cool – it hasn't set in yet,” said De Zorzi, who was named the man of the match.
“I am really grateful to Aiden for giving me this opportunity – it wasn't warranted, but I am glad I could repay him. I was a bit surprised I was playing, but I’m really happy that I got a chance.
“We do believe that one of the guys will stand up in the final.”
The back-to-back defending champions, the Sunrisers, will now face MI Cape Town in the final on Saturday night.
Saturday's final at the Wanderers in Johannesburg is scheduled to start at 17:30.
