The Knights scored 266-runs on day one of the CSA 4-Day match against Boland being played in Paarl.
The Knights had a bat first and the veteran spinner Aaron Phangiso led the charge with the willow with an innings-saving knock of 73.
The opener Isaac Dikgale scored 40, while the allrounder Dian Forrester chipped in with 30 runs as the Free State was dismissed for less than 300 in their first innings.
The former Knights spinner, Shaun von Berg, was the pick of the Boland bowlers with 4/61 in 20.4 overs, while Glenton Stuurman and Siyabonga Mahima each claimed two scalps.
Play at Boland Park resumes this morning at 10:00.

Meanwhile, over at St George’s Park the North West Dragons bowled the Warriors out for 295 runs.
The Warriors missed out on two centuries with Jordan Hermann scoring 99 runs before being dismissed by Migael Pretorius, while Matthew de Villiers scored 94 before being caught by Rubin Hermann off the bowling of Ruan de Swardt.
De Swardt was the stat with the ball for the team from Potchefstroom with 5/52 in 20.1 overs. Pretorius in turn took 3/63 in his 22 overs. At the close of play the Dragons were on 3/0 with Janneman Malan and Matthew Kleinveldt being the men at the crease.
Play in the Friendly City is also set to resume at 10:00.
