Durban Super Giants remain unbeaten and top of the log─── 08:38 Tue, 16 Jan 2024
Durban’s Super Giants is still unbeaten in the SA20 after a 37-run victory over the Joburg Super Kings at Kingsmead last night
The Super Giants won the toss and chose to bat first but were soon in trouble at 34 for four in the seventh over of their innings. They set a modest total of 145 for eight and the Super Kings must have thought they were finally in with a chance. However, they never really got going, with the only notable contributions coming from Reeza Hendricks with 38 and Moeen Ali with 36. The Super Kings were all out for 108.
Super Kings assistant coach Albie Morkel says they certainly felt that score set by the Super Giants was achievable.
“It’s always tough to start a tournament like this. We’ve got an experienced side in the shed and a great leader. All of these guys have been in a position like that. We’ve got no other option than to stick together as a unit. We have seven games left and I’m sure we can turn it around,” he said.
The Super Kings only have two days to recover before they face the Paarl Royals - the only other unbeaten side in Season 2 - at Boland Park tomorrow.
Heinrich Klaassen was the hero of Kingsmead yet again with 64 of 41 balls and the highest batting score of the Durban Super Giants innings.
English bowler Richard Gleeson, who will soon be leaving the Durban Super Giants again, says he is happy with what he managed to contribute to the team’s success.
“Three from three is pretty much a perfect trip for me. I do have to leave, but at least I leave the boys at the top of the tree,” he said.
Gleeson admits he had a rusty start, but said he recovered nicely.
“I came from -1 in England to red-hot and sweaty conditions here, so it did take a little bit of adjusting to. But I think it came through alright,” he said.
Today, the action moves to Cape Town with MI Cape Town taking on the Sunrisers Eastern Cape. As usual, the match starts at 5:30 PM.
