Sublime Proteas annihilate England at Cricket World Cup─── MORGAN PIEK 17:09 Sat, 21 Oct 2023
“I think the boys are in fantastic form and like you can see over the whole competition that it's not every time the same person. So, we just rely on each other, we trust each other and we've got each other's back at this moment.” - Klaasen.
The Proteas got their ICC Cricket World Cup campaign in India back on track on Saturday following a resounding 229-run win over England in Mumbai.
South Africa had a bat first and scored 399/7 in their allotted 50-overs, which is the highest ever One-Day International inning against the reigning world champions.
Heinrich Klaasen led the charge with the bat for the Proteas with 109-runs off 67 balls in an innings that included 12 fours and 4 sixes.
The former Knights cricketers, Reeza Hendricks and Marco Jansen were both outstanding with the willow by scoring 85 and 75 respectively, while Rassie van der Dussen chipped in with a knock of 60 and the captain, Aiden Markram, scored 42.
The tall left-arm seamer Reece Topley was England's best bowler with 3/88 in 8.5 overs.
In reply, the English were bundled out for 170-runs in 22-overs with the only batter to trouble the scorers being the seamer, Mark Wood, who scored 43 not out off 17 balls. The next highest score was 17 off 25 balls by Harry Brook.
Gerald Coetzee of Bloemfontein was the pick of the Proteas bowlers with 3/35 in his 4 overs, while Lungi Ngidi took 2/25 in 5 overs and Jansen took 2.35 in 5 overs.
Klaasen was duly named the Man of the Match for what was his fourth ODI hundred. He not only fought the English bowlers, but the conditions too as he had to take on a lot of liquid during his knock to remain hydrated and to try and keep the energy levels up.
On Tuesday the Proteas will be in action again when they face the Tigers of Bangladesh in a game that will also be played at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.
