Sunrisers Eastern Cape claim inaugural SA20 victory─── KAYLA BARKER 06:07 Mon, 13 Feb 2023

The Sunrisers Eastern Cape secured a four-wicket victory over Pretoria Capitals in the inaugural SA20 final. The SA20 final took place on Sunday 12 February 2023 at the Wanderers in Johannesburg, on the reserve day due to persistent rain on Saturday.
In a fantastic display of cricket in front of over 20 000 excited fans, Sunrisers Eastern Cape claimed the victory title over the Pretoria Capitals. A 4-wicket win with 22 balls to spare sees the Sunrisers at the top of their game.
After being put to bat first, the Pretoria Capitals were dismissed for 135 in just 19.3 overs. The game started strong for the Capitals but later saw them fall behind as wickets began falling at regular intervals. Left-arm spinner Van der Merwe (4-31) and skipper Aiden Markram (1-17 in four overs) lead the way on the pitch, contributing to the dismissal of the Capitals.
In what was a stunning game for Roelof van der Merwe, being named Player of the Match was the cherry on the cake. He also finished as the joint-leading wicket-taker with Capital’s Anrich Nortje with a total of 20 wickets apiece.
After the game, Van der Merwe commented, "It was an unbelievable day. I can't wish for anything more. At my age, you never know when your last game will be, so I put everything into every ball. There was help in the wicket. So looking back at what Rossington did, that is what won us the game. I’m still buzzing. Perhaps it’ll sink in once we have the debrief in the change room."
Sunrisers' Eastern Cape opened their batting campaign strong as opening batsman Adam Rossington scored a brilliant half-century, finishing on 57 off 30 balls. Skipper Aiden Markram’s 26 off 19 balls also largely contributed to the team’s success.
After the game, Van der Merwe also stated: "We're sitting here with a trophy and I'm still trying to figure out how we really won it. Nobody gave us a chance when the tournament started, that's a fact. But we gelled well and almost "money balled" our way to success. In the end, we knew exactly what all of us were going to do and we got on with it. Happy days."
