‘Harmison of Hammanskraal’ joins the Dragons─── MORGAN PIEK 13:52 Thu, 10 Apr 2025

Former Knights seamer Alfred Mothoa is set to join the North West Dragons from the 2025/26 domestic cricket season.
The experienced quick has spent the past two seasons with the Warriors in Gqeberha.
Affectionately known as the “Harmison of Hammanskraal”, Mothoa first joined the Knights in 2020, but made the move to the Eastern Cape after Free State’s relegation to Division 2. Mothoa now becomes the first confirmed transfer ahead of the upcoming season.
Speaking to OFM Sport, the fiery fast bowler revealed that playing for the Dragons has been on his radar for quite some time – and that the decision was largely influenced by a desire to be closer to his daughter and family. “Ja, it’s about time – I’ve always wanted to go to Potch, even before I joined the Warriors,” said Mothoa.
“Things didn’t work out back then, but I’m really happy to finally be heading there. I’ll be playing alongside Migael Pretorius and Raynard van Tonder again, which will be great.
“For me, it’s mainly about family. My daughter started high school this year — she’s in Grade 8 — so I wanted to be closer to her and my family. When I’m not playing cricket, I just want to be able to hop in the car and drive for two hours instead of twelve. I’m really happy to be much closer now.”

Mothoa added that he thoroughly enjoyed his time with the Warriors in Gqeberha and believes he made a positive impact at the franchise – but felt the time was right for a change. “I enjoyed PE, man – I really enjoyed the vibe there. I think I made a bit of a mark on the youngsters.
“But ja, it’s time to move on. I’m 35 now, but I still feel like I’ve got a few good years left in me. In Potch, I like the energy, the way they play cricket. They play hard – even though they haven’t won a trophy yet, they’re getting closer every season. I’d love to be part of that environment and add some value.
“Hopefully a few of the younger players can learn a thing or two from me. I’m also looking forward to working with coach Craig Alexander – we’ve already had a chat, and I’m excited for what’s ahead.”
It’s also believed that another former Knight, Diego Rosier, is set to leave the Warriors – although his next destination is still unclear at this stage.
