Boland bounce back against Free State─── 07:25 Mon, 26 Sep 2022
North West Dragons and Boland recovered from opening day defeats to earn their first victory of the season in the CSA Women’s Provincial T20 Cup.
Western Province followed up their 50-over triumph with a second win over the Fidelity Titans in Tshwane on Sunday.
Former Olympic silver medallist and Protea, Sunette Louw (Viljoen) scored a 59-ball 65 (7 fours) as the Titans went down to Western Province by eight wickets.
Meanwhile, Izel Cilliers stood out with a controlled half-century as the Dragons secured a 29-run win over the Dolphins before a lightening-interrupted clash between Free State and Boland ended in the Paarl-based side’s favour by seven runs thanks to Duckworth-Lewis-Stern (DLS).
At the Tshwane University of Technology, the Titans Ladies were eager to settle the score in the T20 encounter after succumbing to a convincing defeat against Province. The hosts won the toss and elected to bat first, with Louw playing a key role at the top of the order alongside Robyn Searle (26) as home side were restricted to 115 / 7 by lethal bowling from seamers Leah Jones (3 / 16) and Sinelethu Yaso (2 / 27).
WP made light work of the chase through a solid platform laid by opening duo of Lara Goodall (40) and Faye Tunnicliffe (48*) before Saarah Smith (23) and the latter finished things off in the 16th over to seal a perfect start to both domestic competitions.
In Potchefstroom, Cilliers recorded her first half-century of the campaign in a 57-run stand with Proteas all-rounder Anneke Bosch (33) to help the Dragons amass 139 / 4 in their allotted 20 overs.
A combined effort from the Dragons bowlers then kept the Dolphins quiet for most of the innings, picking up wickets at regular intervals to limit the visiting side to 110 / 6, falling 29 runs short of the target as North West claimed the victory.
In Division Two, Boland completed a comeback win over Free State through the DLS method after play stopped due to lightening. Boland began the contest on the front foot as Zizipho Mdebuka smashed an 18-ball 32 (7 fours) before late cameos from Julia Hoal (26*) and Nita Janse van Rensburg (20*) carried the Cape side to 112 / 4.
In response, SA U19 Women’s all-rounder, Miane Smit (34) stood tall for Free State as Michaela Hanekom (4 / 19) and Tabitha le Grange (3 / 15) ripped through the home side’s batting order before the overhead conditions forced the players off the field to confirm the result in favour of Boland by seven runs.
The CSA women’s domestic season continues with a near-full round of fixtures during the weekend of 01 – 02 October, with seven matchups scheduled across Division One and Two.
