Free State officials have urged motorists to obey road regulations as they are expected to experience a surge in traffic, with many citizens and congregants travelling across the country.
The influx includes pilgrims heading to various religious gatherings, families visiting loved ones, and travellers embarking on holiday getaways. In light of this anticipated increase, authorities have called on motorists to prioritise road safety and adhere to traffic regulations.
Free State Legislature Speaker and ANC Provincial Chairperson, Mxolisi Dukwana, extended a heartfelt Easter message to the public, urging citizens to embrace the spirit of the season while remaining vigilant on the roads.
“On behalf of the Free State Legislature and the citizens of this beautiful and great province, I wish you a blessed and joyous Easter weekend,” said Dukwana. “To all our Christian brothers and sisters, may this sacred time help you reflect on the resurrection of Jesus Christ and bring joy, peace, and renewal.”
Dukwana further emphasised the importance of road safety, calling for collective responsibility from all road users.
“Let’s work together to ensure a safe Easter weekend. Adhere to road, safety, and traffic laws at all times. Let us be vigilant, patient, and cautious. May God bless our roads and keep us safe as we travel.”
Free State MEC for Community Safety, Roads and Transport, Jabu Mbalula, officially launched the 2025 Free State Easter Road Safety Campaign on Friday (11/4), along the N1 in Kroonstad.
The campaign focused on educating motorists about safe driving practices and promoting responsible road use. Its primary goal is to reduce road crashes and fatalities, which historically spike during high-traffic holidays such as Easter.
Meanwhile, Free State Premier MaQueen Letsoha-Mathae echoed the calls for safety and responsibility on the roads. She encouraged motorists to cooperate with law enforcement officials and make thoughtful decisions behind the wheel.
“This Easter weekend should be about spiritual renewal, not sorrow,” Letsoha-Mathae said. “Every decision behind the wheel matters. Let’s work together to avoid tragedies on our roads.”
She also welcomed travellers visiting the Free State for holidays and leisure, reaffirming the province’s appeal as a destination: “Free State remains a province to go to, not to go through.”
