Two people have died and several others have been injured in an accident involving two vehicles on the R57 between Petrus Steyn and Heilbron.

Emergency personnel were dispatched to the scene following reports of an accident on Friday morning (11/4), said Free State EMS spokesperson, Sipho Towa. Upon arrival, they found a bakkie and a light motor vehicle involved in a head-on collision.

Two people, believed to be minors, were declared dead on the scene. One person sustained critical injuries and was transported to Dihlabeng Hospital in Bethlehem for urgent care.

Two others suffered moderate injuries and were taken to Tokolo District Hospital in Heilbron.

Towa urged motorists to exercise caution when approaching the accident scene as emergency services and law enforcement are actively working there. He added that while the road remains open, traffic is moving slowly.

An investigation into the cause of the collision is underway.

Meanwhile, the Free State MEC for Community Safety, Roads and Transport, Jabu Mbalula, will be launching the 2025 Free State Easter Road Safety Campaign on Friday (11/4) on the N1 in Kroonstad.

Departmental spokesperson, Hillary Mophethe, says the campaign aims to educate motorists on safe driving practices and responsible road use, with the ultimate goal of reducing crashes and fatalities on South Africa’s roads during the high-risk Easter travel season.

Travellers can expect various activities at the launch, including:

  • Passenger Safety Simulator: Experience the importance of safe driving practices firsthand.
  • Tyre and Vehicle Safety Checks: Ensure your vehicle is roadworthy before you embark on your journey.
  • Engagements with Road Safety Experts: Learn from experts on how to stay safe on the roads.

Mophethe urged motorists, passengers, and road users to remain alert and intentional in their travels.

Against the adverse weather, drivers are encouraged to always be patient, cautious and very considerate, while:

  • Making time for regular breaks: Fatigue can be deadly, so take breaks every 200 kilometers or two hours.
  • Obey speed limits: Speeding is a major contributor to road accidents, so obey the speed limits.
  • Avoiding distractions: Stay focused on the road and avoid distractions like using your phone while driving.
  • Ensuring vehicle roadworthiness: Make sure your vehicle is in good condition before embarking on your journey.
