Five male suspects remain in police custody following their alleged involvement in disrupting a road construction project and intimidating a contractor in North West.

The suspects – Andrew Matane (42), Blasius Makati (49), Chapel Mahlasela (50), Thabo Frederick (50), and Lazarus Mazaleni (54) – appeared in the Koster Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday (2/4), 2025. They face several serious charges, including extortion, intimidation, malicious damage to property, and kidnapping.

The case has been postponed until Monday (7/4) for a bail application, with all accused remaining in custody.

According to the spokesperson for the North West police, Cpt. Mpho Manyoba, the suspects’ arrest followed an investigation prompted by an extortion complaint filed by a contractor working for the South African National Roads Agency Limited (Sanral). The contractor had been appointed to reconstruct the road between the N4 and Koster.

Reports indicate that the five accused disrupted the ongoing construction activities at the site, allegedly due to their unsuccessful bids for subcontractor positions. The situation escalated when the suspects allegedly intimidated the contractor, project managers, and workers. In some instances, they even allegedly forced construction officials to remain in meetings, despite the officials only being present to address specific concerns.

The suspects also allegedly rallied local community members to protest and disrupt the project, ultimately leading to the temporary closure of the site.

Following the incidents, the Provincial Organised Crime Unit launched a thorough investigation, which led to the arrest of the suspects. Investigations into the matter continue.
