The national road running past Stilfontein has been temporarily closed due to severe flooding caused by heavy downpours.

The affected section is located at the Lofdal entrance that has seen substantial water levels, prompting immediate action from local authorities.

City of Matlosana spokesperson Ntswaki Makgetha advised motorists to avoid the N12, using alternative routes instead. Those heading towards Potchefstroom have been directed to use Winnie Mandela Street, while those driving towards Klerksdorp should take Kowie Street.

Makgetha reassured the public the municipality is closely monitoring the situation and collaborating with relevant authorities to ensure the safety of all road users. Updates will be provided as the situation develops.

Residents of Stilfontein and Klerksdorp and surrounding areas have faced due to recent severe weather patterns. Last month, warnings were issued about potential evacuations, as rising floodwaters caused significant disruptions across the region.

These floods led to considerable road flooding, prompting the deployment of traffic authorities from the Department of Community Safety and Transport Management to assist affected motorists and manage the overall traffic situation.

The provincial government has raised concerns over the rising threat of above-normal rainfall, which has intensified over the past few weeks. In response, the Department of Human Settlements approved the establishment of temporary residence units to accommodate those whose homes have been affected by the floods.

Municipalities also conducted needs assessments to determine the full extent of the damage, while provincial disaster management centres were activated to provide essential support to those impacted.

In Moretele, located approximately 100 km northeast of Rustenburg, the floods severely impacted 105 households. These families received urgent relief after their homes, cars, and infrastructure were damaged.
