North West MEC urges calm after arrest of ex Development Corporation CFO─── KEKELETSO MOSEBETSI 06:00 Fri, 31 Jan 2025
The North West Department of Economic Development, Environment, Conservation, and Tourism MEC has urged the public to remain calm following the arrest of the former North West Development Corporation CFO that’s sent ripples through the province.
Kudakwashe Mpofu (33), the Zimbabwean national appeared in the Mmabatho Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday (29/1), facing charges of fraud. He was apprehended by the Hawks on Tuesday in Mahikeng for allegedly using a fraudulent South African permanent residence permit to secure a position at the NWDC in March 2023.
Initially hired as an asset manager, Mpofu made rapid progress at the state-owned entity. He later became acting CFO before being appointed permanently to the position. During his tenure, Mpofu reportedly received over R3 million in salaries.

The arrest comes on the heels of a broader investigation into fraudulent activities at the NWDC, which has attracted the attention of both provincial and national authorities. Former Minister of Home Affairs Dr Aaron Motswaledi revealed that Mpofu’s SA citizenship was acquired through fraudulent means, which facilitated his employment at the NWDC.
The investigation into these fraudulent activities has gained momentum, particularly after the president’s proclamation to probe the NWDC’s alleged corruption. MEC Bitsa Lenkopane addressed the arrest publicly, emphasising that while the incident was significant, it should not cause panic or undermine the public’s confidence in the governance of the province.
“This arrest should (not) bring any panic or (lead to) unduly conclusions among the people of the North West province,” Lenkopane reassured. He added the department’s operations were not derailed by this event and were still focused on delivering the premier’s directives, which included a major overhaul of state-owned entities such as the NWDC.
“The department remains committed to addressing the administrative deficiencies at the NWDC,” Lenkopane said. “The involvement of Mpofu in the corporation’s financial management and his subsequent role in the audit team will be closely scrutinised as part of this ongoing investigation.”
Lenkopane made it clear the provincial government is dedicated to ensuring that justice is served, and reiterated efforts would continue to address corruption and fraudulent practices, which have long hindered the growth and integrity of state-owned entities in the province.
The Hawks in North West confirmed Mpofu has been charged with fraud. He’s due back in court on Monday for a bail application.
