Manhunt after off-duty North West constable’s murder─── KEKELETSO MOSEBETSI 05:30 Tue, 26 Nov 2024
North West police are searching for suspects involved in the killing of a Klerksdorp police officer.
Const. Mojalefa Mgwebi’s body was found in his vehicle in Kanana, Klerksdorp, on Sunday morning (24/11). Provincial police spokesperson Amanda Funani confirmed the deceased, stationed at Jouberton police station, sustained gunshot wounds to the upper body.
“Neighbours found the body inside the victim’s vehicle and alerted authorities. According to information, Mgwebi was last seen dropping off his cousins after attending a family gathering on Saturday night. The motive for the murder is unknown at this stage, and investigations are ongoing.”
Provincial Police Commissioner Sello Kwena expressed condolences to Mgwebi's family, colleagues, and friends. “It’s heartbreaking to lose one of our own to a senseless act of violence.
“Such incidents not only rob us of dedicated officers but also impact service delivery to our communities. I have instructed investigators to leave no stone unturned in bringing the perpetrators to justice.”
Mgwebi’s murder adds to the rising toll of police officers killed in South Africa. During the quarterly crime statistics briefing on Monday (25/11), Minister of Police Senzo Mchunu revealed 17 police officers – thirteen while off-duty and four on-duty – were murdered in the past three months.
Help with civil claims
Mchunu highlighted efforts to combat these crimes. “The directorate arrested 17 suspects and secured seven convictions, including four life sentences, in connection with police killings.”
He announced an initiative to help families of murdered police officers with civil claims against perpetrators. “This initiative (will ensure) justice is served not only through criminal proceedings, but also by holding perpetrators financially accountable for the pain and loss they have caused. We have included this capacity in our revised SAPS structure.”
Authorities urge anyone with information about Mgwebi’s murder to come forward.
