How to embrace a South African summer─── HEIDRÈ MALGAS 10:53 Wed, 06 Nov 2024
The temperature in Central South Africa recently had its ups and downs, but summer is finally here, and dealing with the heat can be tough.
Here are some ways to embrace the summer as suggested by the Expedition Project:
- Hydration is Key: Stay hydrated in the South African summer by drinking water and using rehydration salts. These salts restore essential electrolytes like sodium, potassium, and magnesium. Mix them with water as directed for a quick hydration boost after physical activities.
- Plan Outdoor Activities Wisely: Schedule early morning or late afternoon activities to avoid peak heat. Whether hiking or on safari, choose cooler times to prevent heat-related issues.
- Dress Appropriately: Wear lightweight, breathable clothes like cotton or moisture-wicking fabrics. Protect yourself with a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, and high-SPF sunscreen.
- Take Regular Breaks: During outdoor activities, rest often to rehydrate and cool down in shaded areas. Drink water with rehydration salts, admire the scenery and relax.
- Dive Into Water Fun: Cool off by enjoying water activities like kayaking on the Garden Route, swimming at beaches, or relaxing in natural rock pools.
- Explore Indoor Gems: Escape the heat by visiting indoor spots like museums, art galleries, or cultural centres.

Dawn has the following suggestions for how you can enjoy summer in the comfort of your own home:
Backyard Camping Adventure:
Enjoy the outdoors with backyard camping – no heavy packing needed! Set up a tent on a flat surface with help from loved ones. Cosy it up with yoga mats, sleeping bags, and cushions. For more comfort, add an inflatable mattress. No tent? Use a rope between trees and drape a blanket over it. Make the ground comfy with duvets or blankets and pillows. Add string lights for a cosy glow.
Set up your own ice cream bar:
Summertime is ice cream time – and it’s not only for kids. Why not put together an ice cream bar instead of having the standard scoop after dinner? Set out a variety of flavours and toppings in separate bowls. Don’t forget the cones! You’ll feel as if you’ve gone out for dessert.
