Embattled mayor vows to appeal assault verdict─── KEKELETSO MOSEBETSI 11:16 Mon, 04 Nov 2024
The controversial mayor of Matjhabeng has vowed to fight back after the Odendaalsrus Magistrate’s Court found him guilty of common assault and two counts of crimen injuria for assaulting his bodyguard.
Friday’s verdict has intensified tension around Thanduxolo Khalipha, who addressed a group of supporters outside the court where he vowed to appeal the judgment in the Free State High Court.
“We respect the courts,” he said, “which is why we are taking this matter further. Freedom didn’t come free; people fought for it, so we will also fight for justice until we achieve it.” He urged his supporters to “stay strong” as he continues his battle in the legal arena.
The controversial mayor has been placed on “step-aside” by the ANC provincial leadership to address his legal challenges. Following a September 25 council meeting, he was also granted 30 days of leave and instructed to return municipal assets, including his official vehicle, bodyguard, and other security services.
Khalipha remained defiant, however, describing the council’s decisions as politically motivated and part of a “counter-revolutionary agenda” against him.
He claimed he was being unfairly targeted politically, calling the retraction of his vehicle and security detail an attempt to compromise his ability to serve his community effectively.
In October 2024, Khalipha faced additional legal trouble when a new case was opened against him for alleged unauthorised use of municipal equipment.
