“It remains a concern that the province doesn’t have a functional disaster management centre, and farmers are often on the front line facing natural and other disasters such as fires.”

The DA in the Free State has expressed serious concern over the province’s lack of a functional disaster management centre (DMC) following the weekend’s heavy snowfall in the eastern Free State where countless motorists were left stranded.

OFM News previously reported the Free State Departments of Cooperative Governance, Traditional Affairs (Cogta) and Human Settlements launched rescue efforts early on Sunday (22/9) after snowfall left roads impassable.

Municipalities in affected areas worked to mobilise graders to clear the snow, while emergency medical services were dispatched to assist. The province, however, needs a permanent, well-equipped DMC to handle such situations in the future, said Free State DA leader, Dr Roy Jankielsohn.

“It remains a concern that the province doesn’t have a functional DMC, and farmers are often on the front line facing natural and other disasters such as fires. As we prepare for the upcoming rainy season, the DA will continue to fight for a provincial-regional disaster management centre.”

The province must be proactive and ensure its communities are adequately prepared for emergencies. Over the weekend, farmers and residents rallied together to assist stranded commuters.

Many people and organisations donated food, blankets, and warm beverages to those affected by the snow, particularly along the N3 toll route. Jankielsohn thanked them for their support, which highlighted the solidarity and unity among South Africans during crises.

Social media was flooded with messages of gratitude, with users coining the phrase “No DNA, just RSA” to capture the spirit of togetherness.

While the snow caused hardship for many, others saw an opportunity for joy. Zastron matriculant Ché Grobbelaar (19) rode on horseback in the snow next to her boyfriend Izak Kotze (21). People also shared their wedding photos and their experiences on platforms such as Facebook and X.

The Free State government announced on Sunday that Van Reenen’s Pass had been reopened after a joint effort by Sanral and the N3 Toll Concession (N3TC) to clear the snow and restore traffic flow.

Free State Premier MaQueen Letsoha-Mathae praised the teams involved for their swift action to ensure stranded road users’ safety. She expressed relief at the reopening of the road and thanked Sanral, the N3TC, Road Traffic Inspectorate, and the rescue teams for their hard work, saying she’s relieved the road had been reopened.
